Referrals traditionally arise because the local vet decides that he or she needs specialised veterinary expertise, for example spinal disc surgery.
HOWEVER, you should be aware that the fees charged for any particular operation, be it routine or otherwise, vary greatly from area to area, often by £100 or more. It follows that each client can make an economic decision to travel outside his usual locale to seek specific surgery at a more competitive price. Given that travel costs can be much less than the fees saved, such a referral can make good economic sense. This type of referral is already widespread in human surgical cases.
